Hard Times Mean Back To Basics For Some

I remember my Great Granny Jackson saying once that things started getting worse in this country when people stopped having chickens in their yard. I think that was her simple, countrified way of saying the country was over-leveraged and people had forgotten how to be frugal.

This article from the Kansas City Star caused me to recall her words:

Across the country and the metropolitan area, people are joining the national urban chicken movement, sometimes turning outlaw to raise the birds.

The movement started with the rationale that raising chickens fits in with efforts toward local and pure foods, supporters say, and the eggs are fresh and flavorful. The animals also are entertaining pets, many say.
