Up In Smoke

The Obama Administration has indicated it will return marijuana jurisdiction back to the states, according to the San Fran Cornicle.

I'm not a pot smoker, but I applaud this decision. I heard Michael Phelps was ecstatic. The federal government has usurped the states' authority in so many ways. I'm looking forward to the Federal Government getting out of these issues as well:

* Religion
* Education
* Labor
* Housing
* Welfare
* Medical Care

Absolutely, Silverfiddle. Wouldn't it be nice if those in government figured out that, maybe, just maybe, the world doesn't need their fingers in every pot.

I have come to terms with the fact that many will make that assertion long after the rest of us have remained unconvinced of their claims for power.

But I have also come to terms with the fact that their claims are not ones that I must take seriously beyond following the law, doing so being a strong reminder that the secret to a successful and happy life is self-control and self-discipline.

I've learned a lot this political period, Silverfiddle. Most importantly, I have learned that most people making claims on power do so out of strong passions that may or may not reflect something more real.

As I get older, Silverfiddle, I realize the value in teaching a more conservative ethic to my children, if only to remind them that with all of the foolish vagaries of political life, they live in a good country with good institutions that afford them much great opportunity, if they will only take it.

And that fact about America and the liberal democratic world is not one that any group, party, ideology, or any person of privelege or power will ever need to endorse to make true, nor one that any of them are likely to now or in the near future dramatically change.

The beauty of America and the liberal democratic world is that so much about what makes them great is not dependent on politics, at all, even as political actors self-importantly assert otherwise.

And that is a more important lesson to teach my children, I think, than anything that any ideology could ever often them.

How's life, in general, Silverfiddle? Hope you're doing well, bud. Talk soon.

Ben

Life is good. I still have a job. Don't know if I'll have one next year, so I'm being a bad American and a saving all my money instead of spending it.

I agree completely with your comment. Chicago Ray has a great quote on his blog http://www.chicagoray.blogspot.com/

The urge to save humanity is always a false front for the urge to rule it.
