Christopher Chantrill has written a brilliant piece contrasting two opposing views on what American conservatives should do to improve their lot. Our conservative friend from Canada, David Warren says to start the revolution. British liberal Daniel Finkelstein recommends throwing Sarah Palin and the other lowbrows over the side and buddying up to the liberal media.

This is just classic mis-characterization of the other side. And how are gov't programs soulless. This is just propoganda. There is no meaningful content in any of this.
Maybe Canadian liberalism doesn't believe it, but Progressive American liberalism sure does. 20th century history bears this out: A program to cure every ill and wipe away every tear. What do we have to show for it? A debt that will one day sink us.
Of course government programs are soulless, by definition.
People are soulless as well. That is just to say they are not supernatural, so I will easily concede that gov't programs are not supernatural. I don't know of any private institutions that are either. Big deal. It's written as if this is a great criticism. It's meaningless.
History doesn't bear it out. No one has said "well solve all the countries problems with gov't programs". This idea that liberalism is so idealistic is just senseless.
It's idealistic in that it has ideals, or goals to which liberal politicians strive (ending poverty, etc...) but it is not that they have ending poverty institutions. All they do is try and create jobs when people are out of work and raise the minimum wage so that everyone who works is not living in poverty.
These are not even really high standards. It is only compared to your standards of gov't that these are high hopes.
Again, the excerpt is just meaningless. It's a soundbite. "Soulless," it's literally namecalling, but at least when I call Palin a moron it is both true, and means something like ergo she cannot run a country.
You need to read some American history, my friend. It's so much easier to call Sarah Palin names, though.
There is something profound, even sublime in screwing yourself by some dumb decision you made. You learn from it, and come out wiser on the other side.
When a government screws you, in some clumsy act of benevolence gone awry, you're just plain screwed.

It is easier to call Palin names because she deserves each and every one of them.
She is republicanism though. Get into gov't screw it all up and then blame the gov't for screwing things up.

I just expected more from you, like maybe some facts to back the name-calling.
For example, you could call her a quitter and you'd be correct. Based on her before and after McCain, you could make a case she has swerved rightward in a brazen attempt to win over red-blooded voters. You could even accuse her of being a bad mother...
Oh well. You should also stop falling for the Democrats vs Republican game. Both parties have cooperated to flush this country down the toilet
