I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on the objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.
-- James Madison (one of the guys who wrote the constitution)

our constitution is such a wonderful document. it is so amazing to me that those that wrote it were so precient.

and just as amazing are some of the contemporaneous documents and speeches in support of, or even against, the constitution.

the founders of this country were truly great men. most of today's politicians don't come close to measuring up...

No sweat. We're not into punctiliousness for its own sake here.

I share your sentiments. Now if only our politicians had the same reverence for the document you do.

I believe one of the reasons our constitution is so great is because the authors had the correct perspective. The following quote shows what I mean:

John Adams "Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people; it is wholly inadequate for any other."

They wrote the constitution to aid in governing moral and religious people. It is pretty obvious that our country is moving away from being moral and religious.
