Why the (His)Panic?

** Unhinged DeviledEgg Rant Alert! **
Alright, I'm really PO'd about illegal immigration!

To think that the retards in congress would reward criminal trespass and identity theft with free US citizenship galls me. It also chaps my ass that any foreign fertility goddess who crosses the border can squeeze out a pup and, bingo! She's won the US lottery!

Who's stupider than us, huh?
But anyway, I started this rant because Hispanics in America are getting a bum rap, and it ain't fair. They ain't all illegal, and the ones that are wouldn't be here if the US Chamber of Commerce, businesses, and the Democratic party hadn't lured them with open borders, pathetic immigration enforcement, no-questions-asked employment and a cornucopia of social services only dreamed of south of the border.

We keep hearing they will one day be the largest demographic group in the US, and whitey is supposed to tremble at the thought. Well, that's like saying German-descent people are the majority now. Yeah, it's true, but your average Yank don't know any Deutsche besides Der Wienerschnitzel and beatchen. We've assimilated.

Hispanics assimilate easily
I know, some treat your neighborhood like little Jalisco, slaughtering hogs in the front yard and playing mariachi music all night... But give them a generation or two. Texas is filled with people with Hispanic last names who don't know a lick of Spanish.

How do I know Hispanics are easily assimilated? The evidence is all around us!

If a guy's name is Jose Ramos and he don't talk like the Frito Bandido no more, he's assimilated!

Hispanics intermarry like crazy. Like coffee and milk, American whiteys and Latin lovers just can't help mixin' it up. And the results are beautiful (excuse my moment of soft-boiled weakness).

If you say to some guy named Rodriguez, "Oye vato! Que onda?" and he says, "Excuse me, I'm with a patient right now," he's assimilated!

The average Hispanic newcomer is:
* Christian
* entrepreneurial (No safety nets in Latin America!)
* hard working (again, no safety nets...)
* anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, anti-tax
* willing to live in a one bedroom apartment with 58 other men until he saves up for a place of his own
* and almost as friendly as a drunken Irishman

It's a natural GOP constituency if we can just get them out of the shadows and free them from the clutches of social workers waving food stamps and la raza plying them with illegal ballots and fake drivers licenses.

Here in Europe, the average Brit, Swiss or Dane would trade their Muslims for our Hispanic "problem" in a heartbeat. Count your blessings, Dammit!

There's a fix for our illegal immigration problem - and it's not fences or other weak-ass border protection schemes. No, instead it's time we simply embrace the inevitable and make lemonade. That is, we need to take Mexico.

Sounds good to me. But how would they vote? We could be demographically swamped? We could assimilate a few million, but a whole country????

Are you toying with the DeviledEgg?

I'm not sure assimilate is the right word - maybe something akin to "annex" is more appropriate. They'd have electoral votes like any other state in the nation.

We seize the country, oust the worthless government officials, carve it up into a handful of new states, and sew some new stars onto Old Glory. Complicated? Sure. Messy? Without a doubt. But we're supporting the economy of probably more than half of Mexico as it is, so how would this be worse?

And we have a whole new labor pool to draw upon with which we could begin to break out dependency on Asian countries.

I like it... Since it would be our territory now, we could have a southward flood as well, kinda like the immigration invasion in reverse!

Mexicans are good people, they just have a crappy, corrupt ruling oligarchy.

With some American know-how and the can-do spirit of everyday Mexicans, we could really turn that place around!

Nice rant, DeviledEgg!

May I add that other immigrants contribute greatly as well. I've never met a bad Vietnamese person. In fact, I think every one I've met was either an electrical engineer or a pilot.

The Iranian influx after the Shah fell has also enriched us. They start businesses and grow the economy. You don't see Iranian or Vietnamese kids slouching around looking like gangbangers. They're too busy doing homework.

It is a shame our pathetic government has let things get this far. I agree that Hispanics are good people, and I also agree that people should not be allowed to break in and then squat with all the rights of a citizen.

Mexicans are, like any other nationality group, just people - some short, some tall, some lazy, some not. But as much as generalities get me into trouble, I'd hafta say that the majority of Mexicans I know and/or work with are quite industrious. They rarely throw money at a problem, instead relying upon their own ingenuity and a wealth of community support. Not unlike those picturesque Amish barn-raising, Mexicans pool their resources. Need something built? They'll show up in droves to lend a hand!

We need to shift our technology investment from the Pacific Rim to Mexico. Some electronics are already assembled there, but I believe the core materials still come from Asian fabs. Why not support our own next-door neighbors rather continuing to bolster the economy of nations half the world away?

I agree Rob. I plead guilty to gross overgeneralizing.

Your idea of investing in Mexico was tried in the early days of NAFTA. We invested, Mexico's ruling kleptocrats stole it all, and the multinationals moved on...

Need to drag Rich into this conversation. He may have put some roots down in Mississippi, but deep down he's still one of us Texicans and prolly has plenty to say about the whole set of immigration & border patrol/protection issues.

OD has a lot to say about a lot of stuff... He needs to start his own blog

I agree! Get all over him about that! He's got a website that he never touches. He won't Twitter. No blogging. He's suffering not too slightly from Social Networking Dinosaur Syndrome...

Well, I see myself as an American first with Hispanic descent. My family, who happen to be all Hispanic are hard workers and very successful. Three of my uncles held down two or more jobs and now have their own businesses, now retired, I think.

My grandfather fought in WWII and was given two purple hearts. My dad fought in the Korean war.

I could go on and on.

A little secret you may not know. American born Hispanics, those that have been here for generations are vehemently hated by the new illegals that come into America. No love lost there.

I am ashamed of what I see from those "gang-bangers" it is a disgrace to all the hard-working Hispanics.

Just my two cents.

Sounds like a scrambled egg to me. I am an American, born and raised. My Dad was of French, German, Lebanese descent, and my mom is Italian, Native American (Mohawk). So as for me, I love all immigrants as long as they come in legally through the front door.

With all the traveling, I feel like a scrambled egg sometimes. Just tryin to let you know where I'm comin' from Padre.

I share your sentiment about immigrants.

The problem is,,, you just can't hop the fence ahead of all those legally waiting to get in this country. I think we've forgotten that illegal immigrants are ILLEGAL! That's right, breaking US law. I remember growing up in West Texas and seeing the pale green Border Control bus leaving the jailhouse twice a week. It's a travesty that local law enforcement won't uphold US law. BTW, those that know me, will attest that I have a foreign born wife. But she's legally immigrated. Meh

The thing about fixating on the illegal aspect of the immigration problem is that it's a bit like closing the barn door after the horses are already gone.

It's done. Illegals are here. Suck it up and figure out how to make the best of it.
Oh don't get me wrong, I agree that illegal Mexicans should be handled with the same level of severity that we'd deal with an Iraqi immigrant who'd gained access to our soil illegal. But I'm also realistic enough to know for certain that our legislators are certainly never gonna have the cojones to take a hard-line stance and actually deport Mexican illegals who're rooted in.

Time to make some lemonade.

And I still insist that we'd solve a multitude of problems with one fell swoop - by seizing Mexico and claiming it as our own. The populace would probably thank us for it.

And yeah, us Rich & I have gone to some length to amp up the cultural diversity of our branch of the "OD" tree - he imported a wife & daughters from the Philippines and I (legally - and it was far from easy) imported my son from Russia - and even got him a Texas birth certificate to overly-complete the process.
