Time to Set Aside Childish (and Racist) Prayers

Reverend Joseph Lowery gave an uplifting inauguration benediction that was marred by a racist snipe at white people:
Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.
So the "white" have not yet embraced "right"? This is racist and divisive, and worse, it was met with laughter and official embrace, not the opprobrium it deserved.

Reverend Lowery has been jailed, shot at, fire hosed and dog-bitten, among other things, all in the noble pursuit of civil rights (human rights!).

This great, brave man, basking in that glorious day on a dais of pomp and glory, with the whole world watching, crouched down and stuck chewing gum under the seat of American consciousness.

He obviously paid no heed to the new president's words:
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
Beautiful words, but difficult to accomplish when citizens are aiming racist jibes at one another. No one should understand that better than Reverend Lowery, and the president who laughed at his words.

Time to set aside childish things. Yeah...

I am hoping it was a mistake because that would over shadow this historic moment came to United States History.
We realize politics are coming and the grace period is going to be over quickly. Mr Obama will face serious hurdles from mostly his own party and Pelosi--A clueless person that she thinks she has power. Then wait till be black congressional caucus and community starts wanting to collect from Mr Obama. The republicans will the least of his problems because they
need to find a new voice and fresh ground to stand on.

President Obama has shown so far in keeping race out of politics. I feel I moved pass this many years ago and will be happy to tap dance with anybody that says other wise. Redneck Ron

i can't believe that crap was allowed to make it into the inauguration ceremony. especially considering who won the last election. it was total crap.

Russell: Rev Lowery chose to be irresponsible and childish in the exercise of his constitutional rights. I think it speaks volumes that nothing like this ever happened in the Bush administration.

White people being chastised publicly--I guess that's change.

This so-called prayer was more of a comedy show.

I agree, Joe. It's not the freedom, it's not the opportunity; it's what you choose do do with it.

Rev Lowery chose to make a mockery out of prayer.

We know the results when we appease foreign foes. They become emboldened enemies. We just haven't figured out the same results apply to domestic foes as well. Expect things to get a lot worse now that we've shown a whiney victim group that its absurd tactics have paid off.

Steve: I totally agree with you on appeasement, foreign or domestic. I fear you are correct as well in your last statement. Every liberal cause and aggrieved victim group will be on the march.
