I don't mind letting legal immigrants in, but they've got to leave the head cutting and 6th century obscurantism and misogyny at the door. Oh, and learn English while you're at it! Especially if you anticipate that your petty bigotry and overinflated sense of "honor" will land you in front of a judge.

Being a good southern state, I'm sure they do. However, the ACLU lawyers will be swarming around this guy like gnats on a dog's private parts, and he will never be executed. It wasn't premeditated and there were "cultural" factors that must be considered. Makes me sick...
Being an immigrant myself, I am ashamed that there as a few bad apples such as this man who killed his daughter. I believe that for the most part immigrants are not criminals and to a large extent, America was built over the years both from who immigrated generations ago and those who came recently. America is becoming a cultural rich country both because some of its people have been here for hundreds of years and because some people have not been here as long.
I believe in tolerating different cultures even if I disagree or dislike them. However, I have my limits. Honor killing is either a poor cultural trait or no culture at all. The reason many people either become American or stay American is because we value freedom, security, prosperity and equal justice before the law. I can not imagine honor killing my children, this is a sick a terrible custom and it should not be allowed to take root in America or any other Western country.
When I became an American, I took an oath not to produce sabotage against my new country. I believe that honor killing is a form of sabotage against American values and those who produce such sabotage should never be allowed to enter America. Such characters have no respect for human rights and it is an absolute shame that people in this world live this way.

Hey, Ohio Joe! I hear ya. Mama Silverfiddle came over on a boat with her family after WWII. Immigration made this country great. We need immigrants, but not ones like this rodent.
I think the divide is just too great between some cultures and ours. People like to bring up how different Irish and Italian immigrants were from us 100 years ago, but it's just not the same.
The worse a Sicilian might have done was give you the evil eye. It doesn't compare to throat slitting and swearing hatred against your new home.

The difference between prior waves of immigrants and current, is that predominately prior waves came from "Western Civilization" countries... the road of assimilation was much shorter and easier. Ireland, Italy, Germany, Poland...all have value systems similar to the Anglo-Dutch-French settlers who founded this nation. A little cultural diversity is a good thing, too much cultural diversity leads to Balkanization and alien enclaves which refuse to assimilate. A walk down the street in my old home town reveals signs in nothing but Vietnamese and store clerks that don't speak English... I had less trouble communicating when I lived in Korea.

mark in irvine: As a hard core conservative, I must jab at the ACLU every chance I get. While despising them, I also realize they are working to keep the system honest. It's a complicated world. Despite coming from different points of view, I think you and I would get along pretty good.
