Poverty in America is One of Ideas

Root cause of poverty:  Jobs.  If you have a good job, you won't be in poverty

Everything this government does on the economy should be focused on providing a good employment environment for American citizens.  Handouts demean the recipient and sap his self-sufficiency

A business-friendly environment is key.  Businesses and rich people are where the jobs come from.  Tax and regulate them to death and the jobs go away.

Why doesn't government just hire everybody who wants a job?
Because the money to pay them has to come from somewhere.  In a business, it comes from customers buying goods or services.  A business spends money to make more money.  Government doesn't work that way.  Rather than turn a profit, governments must tax citizens to get money.

A thrifty, well-behaved government keeps taxes low and dedicates itself to the basics.  Government-provided infrastructure can be a boon to private enterprise, but anything beyond that takes bites out of the economy.  Look a California:  Government has become so huge, consuming ever bigger chunks of the economy that economic activity has been smothered and productive people are leaving in droves

Even Salon's Michael Lind admits it's all about the J-O-B.  Only the most curmudgeonly Ayn Rand acolyte would deny a government stimulus program that funded needed infrastructure projects.  But the majority of this current stimulus has nothing to do with "shovel ready" infrastructure, and rising unemployment proves it.

"Stimulus" Understood

Further,  liberals conflate three distinct issues when talking about The Stimulus:  Federal aid to state and local governments, unemployment benefits, and economic stimulus.

Giving state and local governments money to cover budget gaps is not a stimulus, and may actually have the negative effect of allowing elected officials to continue their irresponsible fiscal promiscuity.

Unemployment benefits is not a stimulus; it is a palliative to keep someone who's lost his job from going under.

Federal government paying a private enterprise for goods and services is the only action of the three that could loosely be called "stimulus," and even that is dubious if bureaucrats blow it on chimeras like immature "green technology."

The better route is to incentivize business, the job creators, by creating a stable business climate of minimal regulation and low taxes, but nobody outside of Texas gets elected doing that...

Obama Throws Like A Girl, Plays Hardball Like Bush

The president may throw like a girl, but his cabinet knows how to play hardball, according to Politico:
Earlier this week, the administration launched a coordinated effort to jam Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican who’s argued that the government should “cancel the rest of the stimulus spending.”

No fewer than four Cabinet secretaries wrote to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer — also a Republican — to ask her if she agreed with Kyl that it was time to turn off the state’s stimulus spigot.
“If you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to your state, as Sen. Kyl suggests, please let me know,” wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

For good measure, he attached a three-page addendum listing each of the Arizona projects paid for by the $521 million the state is getting.
Brewer knew she’d been thrown a high, hard one.
Bottom line: Shut up or we'll take your money away. How's that for Democracy in America today?

Echoes of George "My way or the highway" Bush
A senior administration official put it plainly:

“You can either be for the recovery act or against it.”
Bush was much more manly when he said it: "Yer either fur us or agin' us!" And it must be said he was referring to outsiders, although I would have loved to see him drag Leahy and Pelosi behind his horse, like Ben Cartwright in a Bonanza episode. Senator Kyle strikes back with facts:
“It’s unfortunate that President Obama and his administration seem unwilling to debate the merits of the stimulus bill and acknowledge its shortcomings,” the senator said in a statement.

“Instead, they have resorted to coordinated political attacks with the [DNC] and the politicization of departments of government by using Cabinet secretaries to issue thinly veiled threats to the governor and the people of Arizona.”
I admire Senator Kyle, but unfortunately, he's bringing an ink pen to a community organizer gang fight...

Spreadin' It Around

Obama and the Democrats in Congress are buying votes with your money

Counties that supported Obama last year have reaped twice as much money per person from the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus package as those that voted for his Republican rival, Sen.
John McCain, a USA TODAY analysis of government disclosure and accounting records shows.

The reports show the 872 counties that supported Obama received about $69 per person, on average. The 2,234 that supported
McCain received about $34. (Source: USA Today)
In their defense, maybe it was just a coincidence that those Democratic areas needed the most help. After all, the failed, blighted areas are spilling over with liberals waiting for a government handout, and they all voted for Obama. Meanwhile, the self-sufficient areas tend to vote conservative and take care of themselves...

Bureaucratic Auto-Stimulation

President Obama and the National Public Radio crowd are "surprised" at the increasing unemployment numbers
Morning Edition, July 3, 2009 · The surprising loss of 467,000 jobs in June, far more than expected, is fueling Republican criticism of the Obama administration's stimulus program. After the numbers were announced Thursday, President Obama called the huge job losses sobering. The continuing fallout in the labor market is causing problems in the housing sector, and vice versa.
Are they historically ignorant? This stimulus money has only stimulated more government bureaucracy--it hasn't produced anything. Worse; it is a gross misallocation of capital that the private sector could have used in a productive way that really would have created jobs by now.

How to Stimulate the Economy

* Drill Here, Drill Now, Drill Everywhere
* Commit to clean coal for the next 20 years
* Continue to encourage development of green technology, but stop stupidly shoveling government money at it--it's just not there yet
* Build 50 nuclear power plant
* Build 20 new Navy ships
* Build 100 new Military planes
* Pay private contractors to fix the nation's highways, bridges, and other infrastructure--Don't funnel the money through 14 bureaucracies to do it

Mark Sanford: Newest Addition to Liberal Enemies List

Democrats leave no conservative unsmeared. Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina is the next target

Can you think of one conservative that enjoys the towering reputation of that liberal lion and lady killer (ahem) Ted Kennedy?

Robert Byrd, the multi-billion dollar political graffiti artist who has plastered his name all over the state of West Virginia at the expense of the rest of the country's taxpayers, enjoys mythic status in the public's esteem.

Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Charles Rangel, and now Maxine Waters are up to their necks in million-dollar scandals involving Fannie, Freddie, banking, lending, and political contributions, but it's the Republicans who have been tagged with the culture of corruption. Nevermind the only congressman who is also an impeached judge is Alcee Hastings, Democrat.

Liberals are Revered, Conservatives are Smeared

The American Conservative has a nice profile of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. The American Spectator has a profile of the Democratic National Committee character assassination team that is launching rocks and mudballs at him. Seems he's viewed by the Obamapparachiks as a threat in 2012.

I have been a fan of Governor Sanford ever since he let those pigs loose in the state house to shame lawmakers into dropping all the pork. I also admire his reasoned opposition to federal bailout money to the states and his dogged determination in patiently explaining his position.
He explains that the bailout money expands existing state programs or creates new ones, then leaves states hanging when the money is gone in two years. This forces states into an economic and social dilemma : Cut the programs that people are now hooked on, or go in debt or raise taxes to continue funding the programs. A third option would be to beg the federal government for more money.

As Governor Rick Perry said, This is how addicts get addicted to drugs

That is the perverse result of the state bailouts: Force the states to abandon their fiscally responsible ways and become like the incontinent, overweight federal government. Dragging the virtuous down to your level is a sure way to regain squandered moral authority. Sanford asked the White House for a waiver to pay down South Carolina's debt, but was rejected and became the target of Democratic party attack adds

Mark Sanford for President in 2012

Governor Sanford is plain-spoken and not flashy. Negatives with an electorate that is easily distracted by shiny objects and billowy rhetoric. He's a tight-fisted, libertarian-leaning thinker which makes him unappealing to our entitlement society. Governor Sanford is a well-read man who enjoys openly discussing his thoughts and intellectually examining issues, which leaves him open to hysterical personal attacks from the left. The authors of the attacks don't really believe he's a dumb racist--if he were they would have no need to target him. He's a real threat to the liberal agenda and he must be neutralized.

Mark Sanford is an educated, thoughtful free-marketeer who seems to have a set of core principles that he remains faithful to. Despite being a wealthy self-made man, there just isn't a lot of embarrassment, dirt, or dreaded flip-flops in his past. Because of this, I predict the attacks will get really wild and unseemly. They will have to dig deep and dig hard.

We'll be seeing a lot more of South Carolina in the news, as Democratic party fellow travelers in the press shine searchlights into every nook and cranny of the state, highlighting poverty and looking for anything that embarrasses or discredits the governor. If no such information can be found, they will simply smear him.

Caracas on the Potomac

President Obama and the Democrats in Congress rammed through an irresponsible $1 trillion bailout and now feign outrage, outrage! that AIG is paying out bonuses as provided by the law they crafted. They now attempt to cover this wrong with another wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do. Their steering wheel is permanently jerked to the left, so they are now going in circles.

Congress has just voted to claw back the AIG bonuses. I could care less about the AIG whizz kids, but I do care about the Constitution, which our politicians, like a herd of swine, routinely trample. Their taking aim at the AIG bonuses sure looks like a bill of attainder, which is prohibited by the constitution. From Tech Law Journal:
The Constitution of the United States, Article I, Section 9, paragraph 3 provides that: "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law will be passed."

Definition: A legislative act that singles out an individual or group for punishment without a trial.

"The Bill of Attainder Clause was intended not as a narrow, technical (and therefore soon to be outmoded) prohibition, but rather as an implementation of the separation of powers, a general safeguard against legislative exercise of the judicial function or more simply - trial by legislature." U.S. v. Brown, 381 U.S. 437, 440 (1965).

"These clauses of the Constitution are not of the broad, general nature of the Due Process Clause, but refer to rather precise legal terms which had a meaning under English law at the time the Constitution was adopted. A bill of attainder was a legislative act that singled out one or more persons and imposed punishment on them, without benefit of trial. Such actions were regarded as odious by the framers of the Constitution because it was the traditional role of a court, judging an individual case, to impose punishment." William H. Rehnquist, The Supreme Court, page 166.Federalist Number 44, 1788.

"Bills of attainder, ex post facto laws, and laws impairing the obligations of contracts, are contrary to the first principles of the social compact, and to every principle of sound legislation. ... The sober people of America are weary of the fluctuating policy which has directed the public councils. They have seen with regret and indignation that sudden changes and legislative interferences, in cases affecting personal rights, become jobs in the hands of enterprising and influential speculators, and snares to the more-industrious and less-informed part of the community." James Madison,
Our constitution is so accreted with the decrees of judicial mullahs that this clause probably now means the opposite of the founders' intent. Findlaw has good commentary on this clause if you want to read more about it.

Congress has violated the spirit of this document by inciting wild-eyed, pitchfork and torch anger against a singled-out group of people who have broken no laws. The President has insisted he is not a socialist, but Hugo Chavez must be envious. He had to pack the government with his Bolshevik cronies to get such results; President Obama is doing it with freely elected politicians.

The Looting of America: An Inside Job

The most galling aspect of this Obama-Rama-Ding-Dong Progressive Porkapalooza celebration is that people calling themselves conservatives got this socialist boulder rolling.

This latest Kabuki theater over AIG bonuses only makes it worse. Then-Senator Obama, Senator Dodd and Congressman Barny Frank all voted for the bill that had Dodd's provision in it authorizing those bonuses, but nevermind. Manufactured outrage plays well with the ignorant boobs who vote for these charlatans.

President Obama had this to say when a reporter asked him if he was a socialist as his critics charge:
"I did think it might be useful to point out that it wasn’t under me that we started buying a bunch of shares of banks. It wasn’t on my watch. And it wasn’t on my watch that we passed a massive new entitlement -– the prescription drug plan -- without a source of funding."
Touche', Mr President, even if it did take you two hours of consulting with advisers to craft this riposte.

The Bush White House ("I had to destroy capitalism to save it," or something like that) started the multi-trillion-dollar run on the treasury. The Wall Street banksters needed to restock their portfolios, so they called their buddy Dirty Hank, a Wall Street investment bankster himself. They then carried out their brazen plan to loot the treasury in broad daylight.

Grab a Plunger!

I got so tired of hearing about the "bad debt" clogging the system. I kept thinking of toilets and plungers... These financial instruments were clogging the system because they were now worth 20 cents on the dollar. In free-market capitalism, the owner sucks it up or goes under. In our Wall Street welfare queen system, nobody was willing to settle for that when Uncle Sucker raised the possibility that he would buy it for the ridiculous price of a dollar on the dollar.

If you were holding these assets, wouldn't you sit on them if you believed the government would bail you out by paying an above-market price?

But what if the US government came out and said in effect "tough luck, we're not bailing anybody out," what would you do? You'd sell for 20 cents on the dollar. You'd make some meager but productive lemonade out of those lemons, which would spur some economic activity and plunger those those turds down that were clogging the system.

President Bush and a band of cowardly Republicans got the bailout bandwagon rolling, providing a golden opportunity to President Obama and the liberal Democrats to usher in a new age of redistributionist liberalism that would make FDR blush. They've grabed it with gusto. They will blame Republicans, Reagan, and Bush all the way to a permanent majority, harvesting votes from an entitlement class addicted to government handouts. At least they seem willing to entertain the masses with some liberal agitprop.

We missed a real chance to learn a once-in-a-lifetime lesson. Unfortunately, all we learned was that when you dirty your diaper Uncle Sam will change it for you, at the expense of those who have learned to care for themselves.

Federal Crack Dealers

I am disappointed in President Obama. I didn't vote for him but I wished him well and hoped he would end business as usual in DC. I now realize I was hopelessly deluded.

His speech before Congress last night was populist, partisan, cocky posturing. Newsweek was right: We are all socialists now. Government will wipe away every tear, change every diaper, and pay for everybody's college. I guess I can drain my kids' college fund now and buy some kickass guitars and guns...

The Great Benefactor took control last night, but a few weeks ago he ceded leadership on the stimulus to Harry and the Pelosicrats, who hastily slapped together a trillion dollar monument to economic ignorance. I now understand why he did it: He is in complete partisan agreement with them.

Robert Samuelson, brilliant economics reporter and non-partisan honest broker, calls this monstrosity what it is: A liberal cornucopia of pet spending projects that is too unfocused to do any stimulating.

Republican governors are leading a revolt (Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Butch Otter of Idaho, Rick Perry of Texas and Mark Sanford of South Carolina). Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has actually read the stimulus bill, unlike the Democrats who voted for it. He points out that this is anything but a "one time" initiative...
The tens of billions of dollars of aid for health care, welfare and education will disappear in two years and leave states with no way to finance the expanded programs.
The Governor of Texas doesn't like it much either:
Mr. Perry sent a letter to President Obama last week warning that Texas may refuse certain stimulus funds. "If this money expands entitlements, we will not accept it. This is exactly how addicts get hooked on drugs," he says.
The South Carolina Governor had this to say about the new programs this porkulus funds:
"There's no way politically we're going to be able to push people out of the program in two years when the federal money runs out," Mr. Sanford says.
These good men are correct: Our government is peddling crack. You can't just snatch billions of dollars worth of programs out from under these government-dependent addicts. This "stimulus" is a Trojan horse that ushers in a new golden age of social liberalism. I guess that's the change everybody's been talking about

One Good Rant Deserves Another

I love it when I stumble across a comment that is better than the original article.

The Orange Country Register had a good editorial about the pork spendulus, where the editors concluded "Without secrecy, panic and haste, the stimulus bill could never have passed."

A reader named Windfall posted a reply explaining political truth to us in a resigned, matter of fact way. I'm not the author of this rant, and it's not a barn burner like Finntann's, but I love it nontheless.

http://sitelife.ocregister.com/ver1.0/Content/images/no-user-image.gif

windfall wrote:

Let me make this real simple for you. If you are a political party, you are in business to win elections. To do that, you need voters.

If you are the party of say the long distance runners, you want to create more long distance runners, either by importing them or by influencing voters already here to become long distance runners.

If you are the party of the rich, you want to create more rich voters. You do this by removing impediments to work, saving, investment and production. You lower tax rates and reduce the burden of government.

If you are the party of the poor, you want to create more poor voters. You do this by increasing impediments to work, saving, investment and production. You raise tax rates and increase the burden of government. If this still doesn’t create enough poor voters to solidify your powerbase, you import more poor people and put them on a path to citizenship or just register them to vote anyway. And if this still doesn’t create enough poor voters, you finally just pay people outright to stay dependent on government, which ensures that they never get ahead.

The path to financial independence has an early fork in the road.

One way leads to dependence, one to independence. In order to qualify for government handouts, you need to present and document yourself as a victim. In order to get ahead, you need to accept the axiom that “if it’s going to be, it’s up to me”.

These two positions, states of mind really, are diametrically opposed. It is virtually impossible to hold both concepts of oneself simultaneously. This is why you can choose to get by or you can choose to get ahead but you can’t choose both. Of course, you can always go back and revisit that choice. And that is why the welfare reform of the 1990s worked in terms of weaning people off the welfare rolls and onto a different, more responsible, more productive and, ultimately, more independent path.

In repealing welfare reform as well as encouraging illegal immigration, motor voter laws and the right to vote without providing even basic identification, and by constantly pushing for higher taxes, more government intrusion and intervention into business as well are more borrowing and spending,
Democrats are simply doing everything in their power to make it easier to get by and harder to get ahead. They’re hoping that when millions of voters and potential voters reach or revisit that fork in the road, they will choose dependency.

What’s so difficult to understand about that? After all, they are the party of the poor. They need to create as many poor people (and as few rich) as possible.

Bread & Circuses

Harry and the Pelosicrats, at the urging of Our Great Benefactor, slipped a few extra gifts into the spendulus bill, according to this very serious WaPo article. I'll ask a few questions, since the dullards in the press are still too busy drooling over our new president:
The final bill, approved by Congress on Friday, includes $8 billion in unplanned spending specifically requested by President Obama for regional high-speed rail projects
How much extra will this $8 billion cost? High speed rail will not pay for itself, it will have to be maintained by money the government takes from you and me, like Amtrack is now. If it were a financially smart idea, entrepreneurs would have already built it.

No pork package would be complete without an additional handout to a bloated failure:
The GM language emerged after the automaker warned that several conditions in its $13.4 billion loan agreement with the federal government could trigger tax liabilities of between $7 billion and $10 billion. As a result, the company argued, it might have to devote a large portion of its loan to paying taxes.
God forbid GM should have to pay taxes like the rest of us. Notice how only the federal government can cause you to incur a $10 billion liability by giving you a handout?

Most disgusting of all is how myriad special interest groups treat the Federal Government as a million-teated hog, a kind of porcine Ishtar, sacred prostitute of the Temple of Irresponsible Self-Indulgence.
With just a gesture of the finger, Caesar has directed we throw an additional $8 billion into this bacchanalia.

Bread and Circuses...

Media Halleluja Choir Goes Off Script

Jake Tapper throws the BS flag on President Obama. He better watch his back.

He reports that Caterpillar's CEO directly contradicted the president saying, no, he won't be hiring back those laid off people once the stimulus is signed. The CEO then pointed out that the spendulus was short on heavy construction, which is the type of work that would increase business for the construction equipment giant.

Next, McClatchy News , home of Helen Thomas and more liberal than even the NY Times, let this article slip through:

WASHINGTON — The compromise economic stimulus plan agreed to by negotiators from the House of Representatives and the Senate is short on incentives to get consumers spending again and long on social goals that won't stimulate economic activity, according to a range of respected economists.

"I think (doing) nothing would have been better," said Ed Yardeni, an investment analyst who's usually an optimist, in an interview with McClatchy. He argued that the plan fails to provide the right incentives to spur spending.

I love it when the trained apes turn on their masters...

Porkulus Spendulus Maximus Critiqued

What hath Saint Caesar Barackulus and his Holy Pelosi Choir wrought?

Michael Franc gives us the answer. If you want a succinct but thorough reading of just what's wrong with this socialist monstrosity, read this article. Bookmark it, print it and carry it around with you, show it to your friends, use it against your ideological adversaries. Here are the highlights:
  • Reversal of welfare reforms with perverse incentives to states to increase their welfare roles
  • Advances the socialist Stealth Care agenda
  • Takes money from fiscally responsible states and gives it to the financially and morally bankrupt ones
  • Acts as a magnet to illegal aliens (You don't really believe all those out of work investment bankers will pick up hammers and shovels, do you?) We don't have enough skilled construction and trades professionals to fill all these make-work jobs
  • Doubles Department of Education spending (Thanks the teachers unions for putting Obama and the Dems in power).

Arm yourself. Go read the whole article here at National Review Online.

Michael Steele -vs- Liberal Progagandists

Michael Steele wrote a beautiful critique of the liberal Democrats' porkulus bill in USA Today.

Of course, the comments forum was visited by the mushy headed thinkers who eat the Democrats's socialist propaganda and crap it out on the rest of us:

out there wrote: 21m ago
Like always Steele gets it wrong. The GOP gave away 1.3 trillion dollars in tax cuts under Bush most of it geared toward their rich friends. The end result is the current financial mess that we are in. It seems that they never will learn from their mistakes. For good measure the GOP is now trying to rewrite the history of the great depression of the 1930's in an effort to mask their mistakes of today. Sorry Steele but the GOP has never understood the American economy and never will. Tax cuts are not the answer. It is not possible to run this nation on a 1930's tax rate. What we need is jobs and the only way to make jobs is to spend money. We also need national health care which would go a long way towards helping out American bossiness. It's time to spend our taxes dollars on us instead of the massive spending on defense. It's time we learned to get along with the rest of the world and them with us- in other words GROW UP

Here is my response. Not surprisingly, out there, never responded back. These liberal graffiti artists spray their unintelligible blather and run like hell so the logic police won't nab them:

Out there: Please show the correlation and causation between tax cuts and economic failure. The answer is you can't. Cutting taxes and freeing the private sector has worked everywhere it has been tried. Government controlled economy has worked nowhere.

Your liberal propaganda sounds good but crumbles under scrutiny.

Government make-work jobs, like in the 30's, kept people from starving, which was a good thing, but it did not rebuild the economy. The economy did not recover until FDR loosened government control over everything and let the private sector do what it does best: Create real jobs and grow a real economy.

Our free market system works until Dems like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd get in bed with Fannie, Freddie, and the Wall Street banksters, exempting them from government regulation. Look it up: Wall street has given overwhelmingly to the Democrats over the last 8 years. Follow the money!

Our failure is a moral one, and the liberal democrats led the way into oblivion.

Who do you blame for wrecks on the interstate? President Eisenhower for implementing the interstate system? How about automobiles? Do you blame the interstate system itself, or do you blame those who don't follow the rules of the road?

Yes, it is time to grow up and stop believing everything you hear just because your guy said it.

Porkulus: The Monster that ate DC

The "stimulus bill" is a liberal dream: A $900 billion pork platter that spreads taxpayer money like fertilizer in hopes that a thousand social programs will bloom. Here are some excerpts from WSJ:
Some $30 billion, or less than 5% of the spending in the bill, is for fixing bridges or other highway projects.

by our estimate only $90 billion out of $825 billion, or about 12 cents of every $1, is for something that can plausibly be considered a growth stimulus. And even many of these projects aren't likely to help the economy immediately.

The larger fiscal issue here is whether this spending bonanza will become part of the annual "budget baseline" that Congress uses as the new floor when calculating how much to increase spending the following year, and into the future.
Peter Ferrara catalogs the pork in the bill. It runs the gamut: Money for ACORN, Headstart, National Endowment for the Arts, increased welfare spending, government health care for families making four times the poverty rate ...

Don't believe all those conservative and libertarian naysayers? Then listen to unabashed liberal Democrat and Obama cheerleader Ron Brownstein writing in National Journal:

To call the economic legislation now moving through Congress a stimulus bill obscures its full implications. The measure represents the most ambitious effort in decades to swell public spending on domestic priorities such as education, infrastructure, and scientific research that many Democrats consider the foundation stones of sustained prosperity.

But it also provides the biggest surge in long-term public investment since President Johnson's Great Society in the 1960s.

Liberals are drooling at this once in a lifetime opportunity to grab double fistfuls of taxpayer money, haul it out in tractor trailer loads and shower those who didn't earn it. Their aim is bigger government intruding upon the smallest nooks and crannies of our already big brother supervised lives. Like Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel said, "You can't let a good crisis go to waste."

"No president in my lifetime has had this opportunity to fund public investments," says Robert Reich, a University of California (Berkeley) public policy professor who advised Obama's campaign.

There are some voices of sanity crying out in the wilderness. Eamon Javers and Jim Vandehei over at Politico sum up the argument of the Do-Nothings.
For the Do-Nothings, the argument isn’t about economic nuance, it’s about right and wrong. They say that borrowing more money to finance a stimulus package will pass a crushing and possibly permanent debt load on to the next generation. “The question is,” says Chris Edwards, the director of tax policy studies at Cato, “is this morally proper?”

“The economy was too big. It was all phantom wealth borrowed from abroad,” says Andrew Schiff, an investment consultant at Euro Pacific Capital and a card-carrying member of the stand-tall-against-the-stimulus lobby. “All this stimulus money is geared toward getting consumers spending and borrowing again. But spending and borrowing were the problem in the first place.”

The Do-Nothing Crowd also points to some of the hidden upsides of the recession — developments they say are already helping position the U.S. economy for a recovery.

The most noticeable impact is that housing prices are coming down to a more sustainable level. For first-time buyers, this is reopening a path to homeownership that had been all but blocked by hyper-inflated prices.

...weak companies that have problems competing are being weeded out of the system.

...companies have been forced to face the reality that they haven’t been making products that customers actually want to buy. (think GM)

American families are finally starting to pay down the dangerously high debt levels they’ve accumulated.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Edward Prescott of Arizona State University agrees. “Congress has to do what people want, and it’s clear that the people want this stimulus,” Prescott says. “But I just wish the people would tell them: ‘Don’t do it.’”
The Wall Street Welfare Queens got their chance to loot the treasury under President Bush's reign, now the Socialist Democrats get their crack at taxpayer money in a President Obama joint. A bi-partisan screwjob is still a screwjob nonetheless.

Língchí: Death of a thousand cuts.

And so it starts, "the death of a thousand cuts". Língchí was a form of torture and execution used in China from about the year 900 until 1905. It is a method of execution in which the subject is slowly killed by cuts removing pieces of the body.

While Obama talks tax cuts, House Majority leader Steny Hoyer announced plans to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program by a 156% tax increase on cigarettes, raising the tax from 39 cents to an even dollar. That's an easy 21 billion in revenue over Obama's first term.

You see, we all know that children need medical coverage and that smokers are an easy target. 21 billion for very little pain or political capitol, since smokers are a relatively powerless minority and imposing a 'sin tax' on politically incorrect behavior is likely to have a positive political impact. Sooner or later someone will trump up the statistic that the tax saved 17,000 lives a year or something and Big Daddy Government is the hero.

Nancy Pelosi wants to see the existing current tax cuts repealed "Put me down as one in favor for repeal as soon as possible", the subject being, and let's not mince words... increasing taxes on those making more than 250,000 a year. You won't hear it put that way, but repealing a tax cut is increasing taxes. Again it is a minority population, the top 1% of earners foot between 30 and 40% of the bill (figures vary).

One congressional budget office study on health care options looked at taxing soft drinks as a method of raising another 5 billion or so a year. Another cut taken from the body of a, if not small, at least relatively disorganized population segment. Do the Dew, so to speak. What kind of uproar is a tax on soft drinks going to generate? Certainly less than if they simply generated an additional 5 billion by raising the income tax.

Also on the table, a $500 payroll tax holiday, in essence another 'stimulus' check. It doesn't really have much of a long term significant impact on anything, but hey! It makes people feel good, at least for a little while, while most don't really ponder much over the fact that it's their own money they are getting back... at least for the taxpayers.

There is talk of leaving the Alternate Minimum Tax alone, this AMT was designed to ensure that the wealthy pay at least a minimum amount of taxes by closing off loopholes. Find enough loopholes and the AMT kicks in. Unfortunately, due to inflation, the AMT has been creeping down the tax bracket effecting more and more Americans it was never intended to 'get'.

And it is all accomplished with smoke and mirrors, we don't "raise" taxes, we "repeal cuts" , we take your money, give a little bit back, and you thank us for it. We're not going to tax your income, but we'll damn well tax your spending, especially on all that stuff we don't think you should be doing in the first place, like smoking cigarettes, drinking soda, and emitting carbon.

As we prepare to enter the new administration Hoyer was quoted as saying "Republicans proceeded over the last eight years as if deficits didn't matter", with a straight face as the congressional budget office informs us that we face an unprecedented projected deficit of 1.2 trillion for Obama's first year in office.

Honestly, the current fiscal crisis is a godsend to those of a big government, socialist bent... they can implement all the big government they want under the excuse of 'economic recovery'. In his American Recovery and Reinvestment Speech today our future president said "No longer can we allow the unscrupulous lending and borrowing that leads only to destructive cycles of bubble and bust." I am left wondering what he thinks a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit is.

Sure, spending 1.2 trillion dollars is going to stimulate the economy and create jobs, but it is a short term fix for a long term problem, and it is self-perpetuating. Once the government starts throwing big money around, they are not going to be able to stop. When government steps in to be the Big Daddy and take care of everyone the question we should be asking is how they intend to extricate themselves from the position a few years hence. Obama wants to modernize 75% of federal buildings...and when that is done? what? lay all the workers off? Growing government is always much easier than shrinking it. The question is what does government do when it can no longer afford to be Big Daddy? When Roosevelt tried to balance the budget in his second term following the great depression it caused a 4% jump in unemployment. The only thing that saved his ass was World War II.

1.2 trillion dollars the first year alone, the money is going to have to come from somewhere. The government can not continue to borrow, borrow, borrow, without devaluing the currency, our bond rating goes down, foreign investment goes down, inflation goes up. Unreformed (and by reformed they don't mean expanded), the government accounting office estimates that Medicare and Social Security expeditures will exceed revenues by 40 trillion dollars over the next 75 years... sometime between 2030 and 2040 expenditures will exceed income, and we are looking at expanding these programs. 25 percent of the debt is held by foreign governments, the risk in expanding debt is not inflation but hyperinflation.

The government is going to be forced to increase revenue, at first most likely by Língchí...that is increasing taxes a little here and a little there, most likely in a fashion least likely to cause a public backlash. Eventually you are going to have to see an across the board increase in taxes to pay for all this...all the while the value of American currency is going to be going down, the price of foreign imports is going to be going up (and that's a lot of stuff since manufacturing has been moving overseas), you... all of you, will lose purchasing power... and we're all going to pay for it in the end.

2+2=5...it's doubleplus good!
